Video Tutorial How to Create a Post in WordPress

How To Create A WordPress Post

This is a video tutorial on how to create a simple wordpress post. There is a difference between a POST and a PAGE. Although both look very similar and function similarly, there is a big difference on where your information will show up.

A post on WordPress goes to where all the blogs are listed and typically adds your content to the list of other blogs. Posts can be tagged and categorized, while pages are simply static pages on the blog’s site.

Here are the steps you need to take to make a post in WordPress:

  1. Be sure you are logged into your WordPress as a user.
  2. Once logged in, there are different places that you can click to create a new post. The easiest place to go is on the top of the web page to where the dark gray bar goes across the screen and click on the “+NEW” option, then select post.
  3. You should now fill in the top section with the title of the post
  4. Next, write your post in the space provided below.
  5. Select your category that you want to associate with this post on the right side of your screen in the “category” section
  6. If you want to “Preview” your page, Click on the preview button at the top of the right sidebar and be sure to close out the new tab that opened your preview to get back to your editing page.
  7. Input any tags that need to be entered and in the “Tags” section on the lower right side of the screen.
  8. If you installed “All in One SEO Pack”, enter any information in the plugin’s section to  optimize your post.
  9. Proofread your post. If you like the way it looks and reads, click on the blue “Publish” button on the right. Don’t forget that you can always edit and update your post at any time.

Here’s How Easy It Is To Use WPTwin

WPTwin is so easy to use! Here’s how:

  1. After you’ve made your purchase and downloaded your wptwin product, you will need to access your website servers. If you do not know how to do this, call your hosting company and ask if they can show you how to access the website servers where your WordPress blog resides. Many hosting companies have tutorials online or have good customer support staff that can help you.
  2. Once you can see inside the folder where all you wordpress files are located, you need to upload the wptwin.php file into that area.
  3. You can tell if you did it right by going to your browser and typing wptwin.php after your url. (For example, in the browser address bar, the address should say: wptwin screenshotYou will then see a screen that says either you need to login, OR you will see a page that looks like this —>
  4. Next, all you need to do is click on the “Click To Clone” button and your backup will start to generate for you to download.
  5. saving a wptwin file to your desktop

You now need to download the generated “clone” file to your computer and put in on a disc or backup drive so it is in a safe place. —->

  6. This file is a complete backup of your blog and includes the database as well. If it is small enough, it can be burned on a DVD to be sure that you don’t lose this clone.

Using the Clone to duplicate a site you’ve built in another location

The clone file can also be used to duplicate the look and feel of a site that you already created and like. You can deploy it in its entirety to a whole new location and simply change what you want in its duplicate home. I have used this when trying to build a strong presence in a micro niche market no one has gone after. This technique can save days worth of work! The cloned locations can also be used to test plugins, updates, and risky changes to the code.

How To Deploy The Clone

  1. Before you can use the clone, you will need to install WordPress on the website you will be using. It will start off as the basic template, which is what you want.
  2. Now, If you are ready to use your clone file, you will now need to upload the file called wptwindeploy.php that came in your download folder from your order. You will upload that file into the location that you installed wordpress. It should “look” very similar to the folder that you uploaded the original wptwin.php file.
  3. Upload the clone file that you downloaded from the site you are duplicating. It should end with “.wpt”
  4. Now type in the new locations website address in a browser and add /wptwindeploy.php to it. It should look something like this:
  5. wptwin deploy validation screenYou should see the following screen.       ———–> Enter your email address that you registered when you purchased Wptwin.
  6. follow the steps for the deploy hereAt this point, you will need to decide whether or not you want to delete the clone after the deploy is done. If you don’t have a backup of the clone, do not let it delete. I recommend downloading it now before you move forward. I also recommend you leave the clone and the main wptwindeploy.php file in place by unchecking the box if you are doing testing. If the site breaks during a test, you won’t have to re-upload them again.

WordPress is not a perfect product and anyone who has done a lot of sites with WordPress will probably have similar horror stories of losing their site. Backing up is a necessity and having an easy to use tool like WPTwin is worth 10 times what you’ll pay for it. How valuable is your time if you lost all your work tomorrow? For internet marketers, it could be worth thousands a day in revenue. All the pros I know use WPTwin to stay protected, you should too! Get it here —–>

WordPress Custom Menu & Dropdown Menu – Beginner’s Tutorial

Customizing The Menu On WordPress and Adding Dropdown Options

Customizing your WordPress site Menu can make a big difference on whether or not your visitors enjoyed their experience or not. A site with poor navigation is more likely to have a low visitor return rate, than one that is easy to navigate with a good menu bar. I am often asked how the menu can be changed and made better. This tutorial video will show you where you can go in the admin page to make changes to the menu and includes a couple of neat tricks that could be useful for you.

Steps To Customizing Your WordPress Menu and Adding a Dropdown

  1. Login to your admin page and go to your dashboard
  2. In the left menu bar in your dashboard, go to the “Appearance” button
  3. Click on the “Menu” button
  4. NAME the Menu you are creating (see “A” in the image below)
  5. Click on the “Create Menu” button (see “B” in the image below)
wordpress customize menu screen
WordPress customize menu screen – Click Image To Enlarge

The main menu section to the left will now activate for you to work on your menu. There are a lot of options you have now to customize your menu.

Be sure to select your new menu as the “Primary Navigation”

Using Your Categories and Pages To Be Menu Options

The Pages and Categories section can now be added to menu bar from here. Be sure that anything you want to be in your menu is showing in your menu box. The YouTube video above shows the various options you have to customize your menu. You don’t need to add all your pages to the menu, or if your menu bar is too full, you can make a dropdown of similar menu items.

Bonus Tip: Using Custom Menu Buttons To Drive Traffic To Make You Money

Here is a lesser known tip on using menu buttons to drive traffic to affiliate partners. You can actually make a menu button that will take your visitors to an affiliate vendor. If your visitor purchases a product from the vendor you sent them to, you’ll make a commission. This technique needs to be done properly though, for instance, be sure to name the menu item exactly what it is and do not try to trick your visitor. Like using a button that says something like, “Buy (product) here”.

WordPress Tutorial For Beginners Changing Header Banner Picture

How to Change the Header Banner Picture On WordPress Twenty-Ten and Twenty-Eleven Theme

The wordpress default/standard themes have gotten so much better over the years. In the past, you were almost forced to go look for a replacement theme the moment you installed wordpress. Now, the theme that comes with wordpress has some customizations that are flexible enough for a beginner to tolerate after some simple tweaks and customizations.

One of the first things you’ll probably want to change to make it look a little more personal is the header picture.

changing the banner on wordpress tutorial
The wordpress default theme give you the ability to change the header banner to something you have on hand.

Here is what you will need to do to change the header image on WordPress:

  1. Login to your dashboard
  2. Go the the “Appearance” Tab on the left menu
  3. Select “Header” and you will go to the page to make the header changes
  4. If you already have a picture that is ready to upload, click on the “Browse” button and locate the picture image file you would like to upload from your computer and click on the “Upload” button, OR you can simply select one of the default images provided by WordPress. You can also select an image in your media library if you wish.
  5. If you’ve decided to upload your own image and you now see the editing screen, you can select the image area you would to see cropped. Keep in mind that the “taller” you make the image, the taller your header will be, which is not always recommended. Hit the “Crop and Publish” button when you’re happy with the selection you’ve made and it will now become your new header image.

A few things to think about when selecting a new header image

  • The header image should reflect something about your blog
  • Keep in mind that a “Picture is worth a thousand words” and when its the header of a website, it could be worth a whole lot more to your blog revenue
  • The taller the image, the more the content of the page gets pushed “below the fold” or below the visitors view. (that’s not a good thing)
  • Use good, in focus, and clear pictures for headers
  • Keep it as professional looking as possible
  • NEVER use copyrighted pictures. If you are not sure, don’t chance it.
  • Graphic designers can be hired for as little as $5 to make a cool header for you at if you can’t make one yourself or have a picture that you are able to edit.
  • If you don’t like it, you can always change it

And that is  how you can change the header image on your WordPress Twenty-Ten and Twenty-Eleven Theme Blog

Stop google And Other Search Engines From Indexing A WordPress Site

How To Stop Google And Other Search Engines From Indexing And Showing Your WordPress Site

Want to test a site out to see if things look good, but don’t want Google to index and show it in the search results? Watch this video tutorial on how to tell the Google “Bots” that you do not want them to crawl your site.

Why would you NOT want Google to show your site in the search listings?

There are actually a lot of reasons why I make sites that I do not want Google to index and list. Here are a couple of reasons why you might think about not letting Google, Yahoo, Bing and the other search engines expose your sites:

  1. If you plan to build a private site for yourself or perhaps for a business that you don’t want the public to access, start with telling Google and the other search engines not to come to the site, then it is always best to also password protect the site so search engine spiders can’t go any further and accidentally allow your site to show on the listings.
  2. You are building a new site for someone and you copy or clone the old site’s content to a test site to give the client a “Real” idea of what it will look like in the end. You Do Not want Google to Index the test site.
  3. You may want to test a new look for your current site and you duplicate your site multiple times in locations where you can do comparisons. All the test sites locations should not be listed on Google.
  4. If you are using wordpress and want to test plugins, you definitely should have a test location to copy your site and test the plugins. (plugins have broken many wordpress sites and should be used with caution)
  5. If you are doing special pay per-click-campaigns with pages that have some duplicate content as your primary “organic” site, it would be best not to index those pay-per-click sites (as long as those are ONLY pay per click site locations and you don’t need them to be found organically)
  6. In the rare occasion that you put up a “dummy” site on a subdomain specifically to create wordpress or website building tutorials, you may not the outside world accidentally finding your dummy site.

In case you can’t see the video, here are the steps to keeping the search engines off your wordpress site:

stop search engines from indexing your wordpress website

Now you know how to stop search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing from showing your site on their listings.

How To Add Google Analytics To WordPress

Adding Google Analytics
To WordPress – Tutorial

I received a question on the best way to add Google Analytics code to a wordpress blog. Although I typically do not like to use too many plugins in WordPress, there are some that are too good to pass up.

google analytics screenshotHere’s What I Used To Do To Avoid Using A Plugin for Analytics

In the past, I used to add my analytics code directly into my template header or footer code. That has worked well for me for quite a while except for 1 “small”, but very important issue that I kept forgetting about. Whenever I did a template update or changed my template completely, I would forget that I needed to install the Google Analytics code into the new template or update. Sometimes I would lose a few days or weeks of analytics data. This was a huge issue when revenue or traffic started decreasing and when I went in to see if I could figure out why, the data was not there. It left me blind to what was going on and to know if a Google search algorithm like “panda” or “penguin” was the culprit. It happened a couple of times, but not enough to sway me into looking for a plugin just for analytics.

The Problem With WordPress Plugins

A few months ago, one of my WordPress blogs had a vulnerability that allowed a hacker access to ALL my WordPress blogs on my hosting account (there was over a dozen sites I had that got hacked there) possibly because of a plugin vulnerability. Although I am not totally sure it was a plugin that caused the hack, I have had enough issues with other plugins, that I don’t like to use them unless they’ve been proven to be too valuable, like “All In One SEO”. Plugins can break your blog, so BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR BLOG BEFORE DOING THE NEXT STEPS! Also, install the plugin at your own risk. Some have been known to not be compatible when WordPress updates happen.

  1. First, be sure to login to your Dashboard, then go to the “Plugins” tab on the left menu and select “Add New”
  2. Add A New Plugin ScreenIn the Search Box, type in “All In One SEO Pack” and select “Search Plugin”All In One SEO Pack Search
  3.  Select the plugin called “All In One SEO Pack” (by Michael Torbert) by selecting the “Install Now” text link below the plugin title.
  4. All In One SEO PACK InstallNext, click on “Activate Plugin” and it will appear with your other plugins.
  5. Activate ALL IN ONE SEO PACKYou should see a pink box appear in your plugins section at the top of the page. Click on the red text “the admin page” to configure your plugin
  6. All IN ONE SEO PACK admin page accessLook for the “Google Analytics ID:” field and fill in your google analytics number from your analytics account. google analytics id account number
  7. Select “Update Options” at the bottom and you are done! Your analytics is now working.

How To Change Your Text In Your WordPress Post

How to Bold, Underline, Hyperlink, Change Color, or Make Your WordPress Text H1 Header Style In Your WordPress Posts or Pages.

Are you a wordpress beginner looking to change the text in your posts or pages to something that will help catch your reader’s eye? Changing words to bold or underlining sentences is a common practice in writing, especially blogs. If you are using wordpress to make your blogs, here are the tools already in wordpress to do the things you might want to do to enhance the visual parts of your ideas in your text.

First, be sure that you are logged into your blog and go to your post or page you’d like to make the changes in. If you’ve already created the text, then go to your edit screen to do the changes. Once at the editing screen, make sure that you have the “Visual” tab selected.

If you see only one line of icons, be sure to click on the “Kitchen Sink” to show all the wordpress tools.

wordpress kitchen sinkThis is the “Kitchen Sink” Icon that will bring up a lot of tools for your to edit your text and make your job easier.

If you are familiar with most word-processor programs out there like Microsoft Word or something similar, the tools work the same in wordpress as they do in those other programs.

Simply highlight the text you want to change and click the icon that has the changes you would like to make.

To do other changes like editing the font size or things that are not shown in the tools  provided by wordpress, you will need to use html coding. On another “tipsbychris” post, I will go over some of the common things people like to do with text that the default wordpress tools do not provide or you.

A Note About Hyper-linking Text

filling in the url and title box in wordpress hyperlinksWhen hyper-linking text in your post, be sure to fill-in both the URL and Title boxes as shown here on the right. The Title box helps tell google and your reader what the link is about or any additional information you want them to know.

Here is what it looks like when your visitor mouses over the hyperlink, you’ll notice a little box will show on their screen. Try mousing over this sentence to see the text appear.
